Contraception is widely regarded as the solution to “over-population”, responsible family planning, helping woman gain equal rights, and more. However, since contraception has become widely accepted, there has been an increase in abortion, pornography, divorce, sexual abuse and other problems. Planned Parenthood still believes that contraception creates a better society.
Methods of Action
Hormonal Contraception works in one of three ways:- Prevents ovulation
- Inhibits fertilization
- Changes the lining of the endometrium so that a fertilized egg (new human being) cannot implant.1
The birth control pill has many physical and emotional side effects such as nausea, breakthrough bleeding, headaches, breast tenderness, weight gain, decreased libido, depression, and moodiness. In addition, oral contraceptives may cause sexual dysfunction as the result of elevated sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).2 They also contribute to increased risk of breast cancer.3 Additionally, these contraceptives may increase the risk of tubal or ectopic pregnancies because they may slow down the movement of a fertilized egg within the fallopian tube.4
Contraception and Abortion
According to the Alan Guttamacher Institute, over half of all women who had abortions were using contraception. A former international Planned Parenthood Medical Director said “...those who use contraception are more likely than those who do not to resort to induced abortion ...”5 and “as people turn to contraception, there will be a rise, not a fall, in the abortion rate…”6 The “contraceptive mentality” which is that children are a burden, means that when contraception fails, people will naturally turn to abortion.
In 2005, Planned Parenthood saw 2,399,671 women for reversible contraception products, and their abortion rates have continually been increasing. Abortions have not gone done with more widespread contraception, nor has family life improved as Planned Parenthood touts on their website.7 Until 1930 all Christian churches were opposed to the use of contraception. Many Christian leaders in the 1960’s actively warned of the consequences of contraception, including Pope Paul VI, who predicted an increase in divorce rates and abortion rates. He and many others were laughed at as Planned Parenthood promised the world that contraception would solve these two problems. As we look at our nation today, with over 1.3 million abortions performed every year and a divorce rate of approximately 50%, we can see that these church leaders were right.
What am I to do?
You can help end the ravages of contraception by saving sex for marriage and using natural methods of family planning. These are just as accurate as artificial methods and they have many benefits that artificial contraception does not have. Examples include increased communication between spouses and the capability to detect feminine problems before they become real issues.
